Money Management

The Money Management Program matches trained and insured volunteers with elders who need help writing checks, balancing their checkbooks, budgeting monthly income, or running bank errands.

Services

Services are completely confidential and designed to help

  • people with physical disabilities or memory problems
  • elders with poor vision
  • elders who need help organizing bills and paying them on time
  • homebound elders
  • elders with no family or friends who can help them with bill-paying tasks

There are two levels of assistance

  • Bill Payer Service
    Elder makes all the decisions and retains check-signing authority
  • Representative Payee Service
    Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services assumes legal authority to write and sign checks through a special checking account

Eligibility

  • Age: 60 years or older (age requirement waived if there is a disability)
  • Individual annual income less than $24,837 or couple annual income less than $35,144
  • There is a cap of $35,000 on liquid assets

Fees

  • Possible Nominal amount dependent upon level of assistance
