One-Day Volunteer Opportunities
For Individuals and Corporations
Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) offers the following One-Day Volunteer Opportunities to suit your interests and schedule. Whichever one you choose, you can make a difference in the lives of older people and enrich your own life at the same time.
Brown Bag Program - Volunteers are urgently needed.
SCES in conjunction with the Greater Boston Food Bank supplies 650 low-income seniors with a free bag of groceries. 15-20 volunteers are needed to help unload the Food Bank truck, sort food, and fill brown bags.
Every third Wednesday of the month, from 8:15 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
Farmers Market
SCES' Nutrition Department buys Farmers Market Produce and distributes to homebound seniors. 10-15 volunteers are needed to unpack the truck, sort the fruits and vegetables and fill the bags.
Annually, one weekday in September from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Thanksgiving Meals-On-Wheels
Approximately 15 teams (a runner and driver) are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors. This event is a favorite for people who wish to do something meaningful and show thanks for their own blessings.
Annually, on Thanksgiving morning from 9:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
Holiday Bagging
This event follows the same procedure as the Farmers Market Bagging. The Holiday Bagging enables homebound seniors to experience fresh fruits, vegetables along with "holiday treats". Also needs 10-15 volunteers.
Annually, one weekday in early December from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
ElderFair
An annual health fair honoring Older Americans Month. Volunteers are needed to: set up tables and chairs, decorate, help disabled and frail seniors ambulate to free health testing sites, serve lunches, give out raffle prizes and clean up when event is over.
Annually, one weekday in June from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Office Assistant
Periodically throughout the year you will be called when needed to perform Clerical Duties, Mailings, and/or Telephone Assistance.
Weekdays from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., as needed.
